Onorato Taiyo, Krebs Nico . The Great Unreal - First Edition!

2009 / Edition Patrick Frey / HC / 23 x 33,5 cm. /

Over a period of three years, Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs traveled through the United States and worked 'on the road' at the series of images they call "The Great Unreal." The photographic work is a mish mash portrait of the fine line between reality and its invention, using the quirks and sprawling landscapes of America as the guinea pig. Mysticism and demystification are held equal as Onorato and Krebs deconsruct and manipulate a rich inventory of visual icons: the open road; a rusty, bullet-blasted car; french fries. Sometimes the depictions are pure, unmanipulated photographs, and sometimes they are results of seemingly spontaneous on-site art projects. The sometimes crude, sometimes subtle interventions are constructed in repetitive, associative arrangements. In one example, the duo construct a road out of paper and put it on a hotel bed. The soft peaks of the bulky blankets become the mountains. As onlookers we end up with a series in which chance and human intervention are constantly shuffled. With the help of book designers Megi Zumstein and Claudio Barandun, the picture book provides a visual journey through which, like foreign explorers, the viewers must wander instructionless.
